A Birthday That Saves Hearts
This year, I’m turning 30.
Birthdays usually come with wishes, gifts, and celebrations. They’re a reminder of how lucky we are to spend another year surrounded by the people we love.
This year, I’d like my birthday to mean something more.
Instead of receiving presents, I’m inviting everyone celebrating with me to become part of something that can truly change a life.
During the evening, we’ll gather around a poker table, enjoy great company, and play together. But every poker chip purchased will become a donation to help children born with congenital heart defects receive the life-saving treatment they need.
The funds raised through this campaign will support the purchase of heart implants (occluders) and help provide minimally invasive cardiac surgeries for children across Ukraine. These procedures allow doctors to repair a child’s heart without open-heart surgery, giving them a safer operation, a faster recovery, and, most importantly, the opportunity to live a healthy childhood.
For us, buying a stack of poker chips is part of a fun evening.
For a child, it could mean the operation their family has been waiting for.
It could mean running without getting out of breath.
Playing outside with friends.
Starting school without fear.
Growing up with the chance to dream about the future instead of fighting for it.
I’ve realized that turning 30 isn’t about collecting more things.
It’s about appreciating how fortunate we are—and using that privilege to help someone else.
I hope that years from now, I won’t remember what gifts I received for my 30th birthday.
I hope I’ll remember that together, we helped give children another chance at life.
That somewhere, because of the kindness of the people in this room, a little heart kept beating.
To me, there is no greater birthday gift than knowing our celebration became someone else’s hope.
Thank you for being part of this evening.
Thank you for choosing kindness.
