My name is Iryna Sakhno, and for the past 15 years I have been helping children with cancer.
Once, I downloaded the Getcontact app and looked at how people saved my name in their phones. Most often, I read: “Iryna helping children,” and for me, that is an honor. I was part of the Zaporuka team for eight years. During those eight years, the foundation’s dream of a Home where families could live while fighting a terrible war for their children’s lives became my mission as well.
I remember the first days of March 2022, when within just a few days Zaporuka evacuated all the children, and we were taking things out of the rented Dacha. Most of the belongings were moved to shelters that were hastily being set up to receive people.
In those first days of the war, we had no idea what our fate would be, and it seemed obvious that a house under bombardment would hardly survive. But already in November 2023, Zaporuka reopened the Dacha, and the first families with children — who had come from all over the country to the capital for treatment — moved into the incredibly beautiful house. Here they could live free of charge; they had a garden, a kitchen, a rehabilitation room, an incredible space for rest, and a shelter.
The major hubs that began receiving seriously ill children were Lviv and Dnipro.
Zaporuka opened a Dacha in Lviv and is now planning to build one in Dnipro.
In those first days of the war, when the belongings had been taken away, the children evacuated, and fear paralyzed our tears, I remember how, among the bare walls, an old dracaena plant and the Wi-Fi details were left on the refrigerator at the Dacha:

That day, I took the flowerpot and the small note, sat down at the table, and finally allowed myself to cry.
“DACHA Loves You” became a guiding light, and now hundreds of families each year have a refuge where they are loved and protected while they fight the enemy attacking their children…
