The most valuable thing is to feel alive!”
Before the full-scale war began, 48-year-old Vasyl Kuzmenko from Cherkasy worked in Poland building ships. On the eve of February 24, he returned home and was supposed to go back to work on the 26th, but the war changed all his plans. In March, he joined the defense of his country and served in the 321st Separate Battalion of the Territorial Defense Forces.
While performing evacuation and logistical tasks in the Kupiansk direction, the soldier was seriously wounded. The enemy had been watching Vasyl's crew for a long time. In February this year, during another trip, their vehicle drove onto a mined bridge. The explosion hit his side.
"The cumulative jet passed through the vehicle and actually through my leg. When the shock passed and everything became a little clearer, I told the driver to start the car, but it wouldn't start. We tried to get out, but the door was jammed. Then I felt my leg going numb. I applied a tourniquet, fell out of the car, and began to crawl. I was fully conscious. It hurt, but what could I do? Life...," recalls the soldier.
After visiting a number of medical facilities in different cities, in May the defender ended up in Lviv – at the UNBROKEN Center. It was here that he learned to walk again and received strong professional support. Despite losing his leg, he continues to move forward. He says that he adapted to the prosthesis quickly – thanks to the professional work of the prosthetist.
He speaks sincerely about the UNBROKEN Center: “Everything here is great. I like that we are involved in various activities. It gives me a feeling of strength. A feeling that what we did on the front lines was not in vain. And I thank the foundation for their understanding and for giving us the opportunity to feel alive.
