Art therapy for special people

The Charitable Foundation Caritas of Kolomyja-Chernivtsi Diocese holds a centre, which works with disabled children and youth, children with Down syndrome, children who have different forms of cerebral palsy and children with autism.

While working with special individuals, different forms of therapies are used, but the most effective one is art-therapy. In fact, art-therapy is a modern method of social adaptation, especially an important method for disabled children and young people, who are pinched within the four walls of the room and are socially unadapted. To work in the workshop, which is functioning at the centre, the materials for art-therapy are needed. So-called art healing occurs during the art-therapy. Thus, children and young people learn to communicate with the outside world using visual tools.

Art-therapy allows expressing their feelings and needs independently and urges them to express the motivation of their behavior, activities and communication, which are necessary for their wholesome development and adaptation to the environment. Through drawing a child can “splash” out negative emotions and share positive ones. During these sessions a young person or a child finds his or her integrity, originality and individuality! Art-therapy offers individuals to express their emotions and feelings through sculpture, drawing, design with natural materials.
Unfortunately neither children nor young people with special needs do not have decent care in our country, so we try to help them through creative play form – art-therapy.

We also visit children who have severe cerebral palsy, are not able to leave their homes, do not study and do not have any friends. It is art-therapy that greatly enhances their lives: it enriches their days by various bright colors.
