Help intensive care doctors in caring for patients
Lying in the intensive care unit without an anti-decubitus mattress is a simple way to get wounds. When consciousness is dulled, the body becomes immobile, and it's futile to expect the patient to change their position independently. However, when the body remains motionless for an extended period, blood circulation is disrupted in areas under the most pressure, leading to tissue necrosis – the formation of wounds known as bedsores. Primarily, this affects the buttocks and areas where bones protrude: elbows, hip joints, tailbone, and heels. The issue is not only about the quality of care. Bedsores can begin to develop in just a few hours.
What to do about it? Regularly (literally every two hours, around the clock) change the body's position, turn the person, shift their limbs. Adhering to this is challenging, as the staff must manage countless other tasks.
To help address this problem, anti-decubitus mattresses have been invented. They have a cellular structure. A compressor continuously inflates the air to alternately inflate and deflate the cells, thereby constantly changing the pressure on the body. This doesn't mean that a patient on such a mattress no longer needs to be moved. Still, it significantly reduces the risk of bedsores and increases the acceptable interval between turning.
At dobro.ua we are raising funds to purchase 6 pressure ulcer mattresses for the intensive care unit of the Tsarychanska Hospital*.
*The full name of the hospital: Municipal Enterprise "Tsarychansk Central Hospital" of the Tsarychansk Village Council.
