The only chance to walk is surgery

Kiryusha was born at the 29th week of pregnancy. At the time of birth, he suffered an intraventricular hemorrhage and intrauterine pneumonia. For ten days, doctors fought for the life of the baby. Three weeks of resuscitation and two months of nursing in the neonatal unit in "OKHMATDET" – this is how the life of this unusual boy began. Almost immediately he was diagnosed with spastic form of cerebral palsy. Kirill cannot stand on his own, maintain balance and posture. Increased muscle tone does not allow him to walk.

Now Kirill is seven years old, and for the same amount of time, the boy has been undergoing continuous training and treatment. We were able to pay for the last rehabilitation course by raising funds on dobro.ua and with the help of each of you. So in December 2021, Kirill underwent a comprehensive examination at the Institute of Traumatology and Surgery under the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, at the Osoblyvy Medical Center and at the International Center for Neurosurgery in Kiev. A unique solution has been found for the child, which will achieve great results. Cyril will be able to stand and even walk! This is a selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) is an operation to relieve spasticity (muscle stiffness) in cerebral palsy. The operation involves separating some of the sensory nerves in the lower part of the spinal cord. This leads to an effective and permanent reduction in spasticity of the leg muscles, thanks to which Kirill will be able to stand and walk independently.

The operation is scheduled for February 2022. The result will be a significant decrease in the protein caused by muscle spasticity. Performed at an early stage, such an operation will significantly reduce the number of subsequent orthopedic interventions required.According to the doctor, with the disappearance of spasticity, Kirill will for the first time feel the existing weakness of his legs. Building muscle mass takes time. Sometimes it can take several weeks or months before the child can walk independently - now with much less spasticity. Gradually, the expected improvement will come: a smooth transition to more confident movements.

The cost of such an operation is 100,000 UAH. Kirill's parents cannot pay this amount on their own and are forced to ask for help from each of us. We managed to attract part of the funds from other sources, so on dobro.ua we collect the rest of the required amount – 40,000 UAH.
