Books in Braille: I want and I can read!

At this stage, the All-Ukrainian Union of NGOs USI purchased consumables for the publication of books in Braille (paper for printing books in relief dot font, thermal paper for making color relief drawings for blind children, kraft for packaging books for mailing), paid for the production of hard color covers for books in Braille and paid for the services of a recording studio for the production of audiobooks. Funds in the total amount of UAH 160,030.54 were spent on the necessary paper, which was transferred for printing books. The balance of funds in the amount of UAH 450,276.46 will be fully realized and added to the report after the printing and recording of audiobooks is completed and the books are delivered to the project beneficiaries.

In total, the organization plans to print 20 new editions, with a total of 1550 books (according to the number of covers). The audiobooks will be narrated by actors, artists, singers, musicians, and blind children from different parts of Ukraine (so-called inclusive theatrical audiobooks, which no one else records except for the All-Ukrainian Association of the Blind). Each book, printed in Braille or in a universal design, will have a colorful hard cover with the name of the author and the book in Braille and black print, embossed color drawings, and an audio version in a tactile QR code. Thanks to several levels of accessibility, the book will be used not only by children with severe visual impairments, but also by children with dyslexia, mental disorders, eye disorders, and combined disabilities.

The books are published in Braille by experienced editors Natalia Levandivska and Kateryna Ivashutina, the audiobooks are produced by Yaroslav Nudyk, an artist of the Pikkardiyska Tertsiya; the adaptation of the drawings is done by Elvira Bosovych, an artist of the People and Dolls Theater, who is proficient in the relevant techniques; Oksana Potymko, a blind person, is responsible for the overall management of the project, selection of literary works according to children's requests, proofreading of signal copies of books in Braille, correction of relief drawings and involvement of famous personalities and blind children in reading the audiobooks.
