Books in Braille: I want and I can read!
Between April and December 2024, the project team achieved the following results:
I. 10 new literary works were printed in Braille and/or in universal design (Braille + regular font in enlarged font at the same time). 380 of the 1550 covers paid for by the project were used to bind them. The finished editions contain one or two volumes per copy, bringing the total number of books as of 30.12.2024 to 380, of which 300 were sent to the final recipients in 2024.
The following publications were printed/edited and sent to the final recipients in 2024:
1) Natalia Hrytsenko ‘Tales of Lesyk the Dwarf and His Friends’, 30 copies (sent to the final recipients according to the list attached to the report);
2) Sashko Lirnyk ‘Doctor Krapelka. Doctor Detective’ in 2 volumes, 30 copies (sent to the final recipients according to the list attached to the report);

At the end of 2024, the following editions were printed in Braille and bound, scheduled to be sent to the final recipients in January 2025:

2) Iliukha Yulia ‘Cosmocats. Martian Adventures of Murk Miauska’, 40 copies (bound books were received on 30.12.2024, have not yet been sent out).
The following 3 literary works are also edited in Braille and printed on Braille printers, which will be bound and sent to the final recipients in 2025:
1) Kateryna Mikhalitsyna ‘About Miracles and Eccentrics’, 40 copies (to be printed);
2) Yulia Ratseburzhynska ‘Star Courier’ in 2 volumes, 40 copies (printed);
3) Yulia Ratseburzhynska ‘Star Courier. Extract of Happiness’ in 2 volumes, edition of 40 copies (printed).
The first 8 literary works have already been sent to the final recipients - blind children of all ages studying in inclusive or special schools, to some specialised institutions, and directly to children who are educated at home. Lists with contact information about each beneficiary were compiled, certified by the stamp of Ukrposhta and the seal of the All-Ukrainian Union of NGOs ALL (the lists are attached to the report). One to two copies of each book were left at the Lviv Polytechnic Resource Centre, which works with blind children receiving inclusive education in different regions of Ukraine and also operates as an online library to serve blind readers within Ukraine and abroad (the head of the Resource Centre, which functions as the Lviv Publishing Centre, is the project manager, also a blind person).
II. 7 new inclusive role-playing audiobooks and/or audiobooks performed by one actor were produced. The rights to voice these literary works were obtained from publishers or authors, provided that the audio formats are protected and the finished audiobooks are used non-commercially, which is carefully taken care of by the Assistance Operator.
The following audiobooks have been produced:
1) Sashko Lirnyk ‘Doctor Krapelka. The Doctor's Detective’ (in roles);
2) Graham Kenneth ‘The Dragon of the Lazybones’ (in the roles);
3) Sotnyk Yana ‘Raka taka or the fish that sings’ (one narrator);
4) Anatolii Dnistrovyi ‘Trouble in the Dnipro’ (one announcer);
5) Svitova Slava ‘I'll tell you something in a moment’ (in roles);
6) Akuraters Yanis ‘Summer of a Young Hireling’ (in the roles);
7) Katerina Mikhalitsyna ‘About Miracles and Miracles’ (one narrator).
The first four and the last book are also published in Braille or in universal design; the two penultimate books are also planned to be published in Braille during the next reporting period.III.
The assistance operator provided extensive media promotion of the project and its results. Thus, information about printed books, recorded audiobooks, and sent books, including photos/videos, was posted on Facebook on the project manager's page, on Telegram on the Books and Cinema for the Blind in Ukraine channel; TV and radio journalists periodically visited the Lviv Polytechnic Resource Centre (also known as the Lviv Publishing Centre). Articles were published in electronic media. All posts on social media included the hashtag of the UBB and all financial partners of the project.
Each paper copy of all publications in Braille contains the UBB logo and information in embossed and regular fonts about the project, its financial partners and donors.
As of 30.12.2024, the Operator's bank account has funds in the amount of UAH 18088.96. These are funds to pay for the services of Nova Poshta when sending books in Braille for the production of hard covers.
The aid operator keeps track of the number of covers produced, as the entire amount of UAH 340000.00 was transferred to the ‘Resource Centre “Barrier-Free Ukraine” at once. Thus, as of the reporting date, 380 covers worth UAH 83600.00 were produced out of the 1550 paid for, of which 300 covers worth UAH 66000.00 were sent to the final recipients of the finished publications.
Thus, the project will continue until 1170 more books are produced and sent to the recipients. It should be borne in mind that books in Braille are extremely voluminous, as this font does not shrink in size, and one copy can have from 1 to 10 or more parts.
Funds for recording audiobooks have been exhausted in full.
Thus, in 2024, funds in the amount of UAH 317,610.54 were realised, and the balance of unrealised funds under the project is UAH 292,696.46 and will be used by December 2025.
