Waiting is not an easy thing to do. Especially when you are waiting for the end of the fundraising campaign as if it were your salvation. For Ilya and his parents, purchasing an insulin pump will truly be a salvation.

Two years ago, when Ilya was nine, he lost weight rapidly, became easily fatigued, and drank frequently. This was the onset of diabetes.

From that day on, Ilya's life changed. Now his day consists of a strict diet with bread unit counting and constant injections: finger pricks to check glucose levels and insulin injections are required several times a day.

But even with such strict control, the risk is enormous: the disease is severe, with frequent and sharp ‘spikes’ in glucose levels. Each such ‘spike’ threatens his vision, kidneys, cardiovascular and nervous systems, literally shortening the boy's life.

The endocrinologist recommends using a pump: it will measure glucose levels every 5 minutes and administer insulin, reducing the number of injections many times over. Most importantly, constant glucose measurement allows dangerous ‘sugar spikes’ to be avoided.

In a sense, the pump is an artificial pancreas, although it is not located inside the body. Ilya will no longer be afraid for his future.
