Little Hero

Volodymir Oliynik began his battle with embryonic rhabdomyosarcoma a long time ago. Behind are the long months of hospital stays, chemotherapy, and rehabilitation. For a while there has been a positive trend in the treatment. Unfortunately, the last test results showed that the boy has contracted the Hepatitis C, and it means the long and expensive treatment ahead. But the family has already spent all the money for cancer treatment, and now Volodymir’s parents and relatives are turning to the whole country asking to help them raise the money.

Volodymir’s mother is happy with how the treatment of sarcoma is going, and the boy wants to return home and never be sick again. Of course, some periods of the treatment were hard: the test results were poor, the boy did not have appetite, and he was not even strong enough to move and could not get up from bed. At some point in time, Volodymir developed stomatitis and had to undergo many unpleasant and painful procedures. Just recently, the boy had chicken pox. The list of the conditions that Volodymir had to overcome is long, and yet in spite of everything he remained courageous and kept saying “I am healthy, enough of the medications.”

At present, Volodymir’s condition is satisfactory. He went to Kiev for a consultation, and the doctors there confirmed the positive trend of the treatment and cancelled a surgery and radiotherapy. They said that Volodymir’s body reacted well to the chemo, and they will continue to watch him.

And now the family has had another blow: the boy has contracted the Hepatitis C, and it was confirmed in two laboratories. After the cancer treatment is over, the family will need to begin another long-term and expensive treatment. It is good though, that it is possible to live with hepatitis and even cure it at some point in time if the body is strong enough to fight the virus.

At home Volodymir behaves like a completely healthy child: he is running, playing, helping with chores, trying to learn something new, doing sports and eating well.

When we look into Volodymir’s eyes full of optimism, we believe that he will be able win and that his life will change for better. We ask God to take away the disease and let Volodymir stay at home as much as possible.
