Strings of children's souls

Saint Nicholas Mercy Town was open in 2004. It started giving shelter to girls in bad need of housing and support. Very often they were mothers with babies repudiated by their relatives. Their parenting experience was limited to their childhood impressions. Lack of education and culture, inability to assess the situation lead to an unplanned pregnancy. They had babes crying for nursing and care and… despair. Every mother has her own story. But they consider the day when they received the possibility to live together with their babies in the Mercy Town to be the beginning of their real life.

We are doing our best to provide all-round development and education to our children. In September 2012 Mother of God musical school opened its door for six children from the Mercy Town. They study singing, rhythmic, solfeggio, learn to play musical instruments. We are grateful to the school teachers who lend their instruments to our children. But students dream of their own instruments which could be handed down to next generations of children.

Presently three girls learn to play the violin, two boys play the dulcimer and one boy plays the pipe. If we had enough money to buy these instruments we could organize mini concerts for the Mercy Town residents engaging children, teachers and volunteers. Children would learn more about music, musicians and composers. They would listen to famous pieces of music, would learn to feel and understand them.

Why are musical classes so important? Children from problem families especially need to be believed in, to be supported in all their good undertakings. They don’t need violins as such but they need a hook that would pull them out to the friendly world where they may discover the true meaning of life, learn to tell good from evil.
