Old age often brings not only wisdom but also loneliness, declining health, and financial hardship. For many older adults and people with disabilities, every day becomes a struggle due to limited financial resources, physical limitations, and a lack of support from loved ones. A significant portion of the people we serve live alone and receive a minimal pension or government social assistance, which is barely enough to cover utility bills, purchase medication, and buy the most essential food items. As a result, even simple everyday necessities that most people take for granted become an unaffordable luxury.
The problem is particularly acute during the fall and winter months. Due to the high cost of heating, older adults are forced to cut back on heating by limiting the use of heating appliances or maintaining only the minimum acceptable temperature in their homes. Such conditions negatively affect health, exacerbate chronic illnesses, and increase the risk of colds and complications. For older adults, even slight hypothermia can lead to serious consequences.
The issue of adequate lighting is no less important. As people age, most experience a decline in vision, so insufficient lighting makes it much harder to carry out daily tasks. People find it difficult to read medication instructions, pay bills, do crafts, read books, or simply move around their homes safely. Poor lighting also increases the risk of falls and injuries, which is especially dangerous for older adults and people with disabilities.
The Khmelnytskyi Charitable Foundation "Caritas" works daily with people in need of support. Social workers and volunteers regularly visit those under their care, are familiar with their living conditions, and see just how acute the need is for the simplest things that can significantly improve their quality of life.
That is why we are launching this project, which aims to provide 100 elderly people living alone and people with disabilities with everyday essentials. Each person under our care will receive a personalized kit containing: a warm, soft blanket and a modern table lamp.
A warm blanket will help maintain a comfortable body temperature, create a sense of coziness, and allow people to save money on additional home heating. For many older adults, this will provide an opportunity to stay warm while resting, watching TV, or sleeping, without putting their health at risk.
A table lamp will provide sufficient lighting for daily activities. It will help you safely read, write, knit, use your cell phone, sort medications, measure your blood pressure, keep household records, and perform other important daily tasks. For people with visual impairments, quality lighting is not just a matter of comfort, but a necessary condition for a safe life.
Assistance will be provided to 100 beneficiaries of the Khmelnytskyi Charitable Foundation "Caritas", including elderly people living alone, people with disabilities, people with chronic illnesses, and those facing difficult life circumstances. All recipients were selected by social workers based on their level of need and social vulnerability.
The project will not only provide people with necessary items but also give them a sense of care and human support. For an elderly person living alone, receiving such a gift means realizing that they are remembered, valued, and not left to face their difficulties alone.
We believe that charity begins with simple acts. A single blanket can provide warmth, a single lamp can provide light, and together they can restore a person’s sense of comfort, security, and dignity. Thanks to the support of caring donors, 100 seniors and people with disabilities will receive not only the essentials for daily life but also further proof that kindness can change lives for the better.
