Oleksandr survived a devastating head injury, but his brain is still left without its natural protection – a fragment of shrapnel destroyed part of his skull. Every day, he lives with a constant risk: even a minor fall or accidental blow to the head could have devastating consequences.

To restore this vital protection, biomedical engineers have already designed and manufactured a patient-specific PEEK cranial implant, precisely tailored to Oleksandr's anatomy. It is ready to be implanted during his upcoming reconstructive surgery. However, the implant has not yet been paid for. Because these highly specialized implants are not covered by the Ukrainian healthcare system, we are raising funds to reimburse the cost of the implant that gives Oleksandr a chance to safely rebuild his life.

Before the war, Oleksandr lived a peaceful life with his wife. He worked, cared for his family, and was known as a kind, thoughtful person who was always willing to help others. When Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, he volunteered to join the National Guard of Ukraine.

In March, near Sloviansk, Oleksandr came under heavy enemy shelling. He sustained multiple injuries, the most severe affecting his head. Doctors fought to save his life – and they succeeded. But saving his life was only the first step.

Today, part of the frontal bone of his skull is missing. Most of us never have to think about what it means to live without the natural protection of the skull. For Oleksandr, however, this is a daily reality that leaves him vulnerable and prevents him from returning to a normal life.

His patient-specific PEEK cranial implant has already been manufactured using advanced 3D technology. It will replace the missing section of his skull, protect his brain, and allow surgeons to complete the final stage of his reconstruction. Thanks to the partnership between the Doctors for Heroes Foundation and the Ukrainian medical manufacturer IMATECH, the implant was produced without advance payment so that Oleksandr's treatment would not be delayed. Today, we are raising funds to cover its cost.

Oleksandr has already done the hardest part – he survived. Now it is our turn to help him complete his recovery. Please support this courageous defender.

On dobro.ua, we're raising part of the amount needed.
