From the playground to the hospital. 3
Five-year-old Maxym has been fighting for his life for 10 months now. His life has changed dramatically as a result of a traumatic brain injury after a fall from a low hill on a playground. Neurorehabilitation has become fact of life for the child, his family and a professional team of doctors. During all this time, this boy’s health condition has stabilised. According to doctors, he is doing much better now. Every day we observe the way this child slowly returns back to life.
In the next three months, doctors hope to bring Maxim to full consciousness. To help him in the subsequent treatment means to give him a chance for a full recovery. His family really hopes to get your help to speed the things up for this boy.
In May 2019, Maxim and his mother went to play on the playground. This day turned the whole life of the family upside down. The child fell from a slide a little bit higher than only one meter and received a serious head injury. He was taken to the intensive care unit of the Odessa hospital where the craniotomy was urgently performed and the intracerebral hematoma removed. A few days later Maxym regained consciousness but then there was a repeated hemorrhage with cardiac and respiratory arrest. The boy’s condition worsened and it was decided to save the child at the Nodus Scientific and Practical Center for Neurorehabilitation (Brovary, Ukraine). In July 2019, the boy was transferred to the Nodus Center in coma as his struggle for life continued.
Today, Maxym is in a limited state of consciousness. Every day he goes through both physical rehabilitation and neurorehabilitation. While watching cartoons, the boy reacts to his favourite characters by laughing and smiling. In February 2020, the tracheostomy tube was changed to a fenestrated one (this is a voice tube in which the boy will be able to make sounds and eventually learn to speak again). Now he is working hard learning to speak with the help of a speech therapist. We urge you to help Maxim go through the next stage of treatment. Under quarantine his family is experiencing enormous difficulties paying for treatment; money is sorely lacking. Let's help Maxym get better so his mother cries a little bit less at this child’s hospital bed.
Earlier at UBB, we had already raised funds for Maxim.
