Living with Autism in War

Zakhar is almost 9 years old, but only this year he became a schoolboy. On September 1, Zakhar entered the first grade of a specialized school. At his age, the boy speaks poorly, uses only a few words, and does not understand the spoken language well, and until he was 5 years old he did not speak at all.

In early childhood, Zakhar was diagnosed with autism. At the age of 3, the child began to be taken to various rehabilitation centers, to work with correctional specialists, and was prescribed medication. All this together gave a good result, the boy was happy to attend kindergarten and socialized well. But with the full-scale war everything changed... Zakhar's health condition has deteriorated significantly. The boy needs constant rehabilitation and treatment in order for the child to start moving forward, for the boy to start speaking words again and linking some words into phrases... 

Zakhar is a kind and sensitive boy. He wants to have friends, but he doesn't have any yet because he can't speak well.

"In 2022, my family and I were forced to evacuate from Luhansk region because of the hostilities and we cannot return home because it is occupied. We had to change three cities, so treatment was also suspended due to the hostilities. The last therapy was over a year ago, which is a very long period. Now we want to undergo rehabilitation again, but we do not have enough money because we have lost our main income, land, and housing. We ask you to support our family, because the first priority for us is the treatment and rehabilitation of the child, but our budget is very, very limited," says mother Olena.
