Make a gift that will bring happiness

Does a child who will never go to school need to learn how to read? Do we need to look for ways to sit up a child whose muscle tone is too weak to hold him/her in an upright position? Does a child who cannot see need a bed linen with a bright children’s print? Does a child cease to be a child if he/she is diagnosed with a grave illness? We all need to ask these questions, and there’s nothing wrong or awkward about it. We need to ponder it for ourselves. We become stronger if we accept life with all its dimensions, in all its fullness. In your mind, allow the children with incurable diseases to be just that, children. Help them be children in real time.

It is hard to spell out our children’s medical diagnoses and it takes a while to remember them – they take up lengthy paragraphs in their medical records and zero space in the minds of the majority of healthcare workers. People are simply afraid of seriously ill children, they don’t know what to do with them and prefer to avoid them altogether. There are doctors and nurses who are willing and able to help such children, but they’re scarce. As for the community workers who would be willing to work with such children, those are simply non-existent. As a result, these families are left to face all the challenges on their own. They support each other, teach each other, share contact information and knowledge.

There’s an exciting pre-holiday bustle on every corner now. Can we think of a gift for a family with a seriously ill child which would be appropriate, which wouldn’t hurt their feelings, which would really make them happy? Of course, we can!
We’ve discussed it at length with mothers of these children, we’ve surfed the related websites, and finally, we came up with a list of toys and things which would really make these families happy. Now we collect money for 7 families from Kiev and the Kiev region. So we ask you to take part in this undertaking and to gift them joy! They’re anticipating the holiday season no less than you, if not more.

Yes, they – the ones who encountered a great challenge and tribulation in their lives – still believe in miracles, they’re still open to the world and believe in good people.
