Let's stop convulsions in newborns
Seizures are involuntary muscle contractions associated with abnormal electrical discharges in the brain. Very often, seizures occur at an early age when babies are born prematurely or with damage to the central nervous system. It also happens that seizures occur in case of a Rh conflict, in the presence of serious congenital diseases, infections, drug overdose, and other reasons. And sometimes even excitement and seemingly minor stressful situations during pregnancy can seriously affect the health of the unborn child.
Most seizures occur in the first week of a child's life, as this is the period of the highest risk of seizures in a person's life in general. The main method of diagnosing seizures in children is electroencephalography, and it is very important to do this within 24 hours after the seizure in a children's hospital. To perform this procedure on such tiny patients, doctors need a special neonatal cap.
This cap is an extremely important indicator of seizure activity in newborns, which allows doctors to record seizures in time and treat them. In this way, they not only save the baby, but also give children with seizure activity a chance for a full life. After all, very often newborns do not have clinical seizures, and only electroencephalography is the only way to see them.
The goal of our project is to purchase and transfer a neonatal cap for electroencephalography to the Chernivtsi Regional Children's Hospital* for the neonatal intensive care unit.
Seizures in newborns ruin their future, and today we have the opportunity to prevent this and give babies a happy childhood and a healthy life!
*Full name of the hospital: Chernivtsi Regionak Children's Clinical Hospital, a regional municipal non-profit enterprise.
