Help for burned children in Ukraine

The teenager suffered burns on 42% of his body surface. Such cases are usually treated only abroad. But not this time! Lviv specialists at the St. Nicholas Children's Hospital were able to provide all the help the patient needed at home - in Ukraine.

17-year-old Yegor is from Odesa region. The boy lives in a town divided by railway tracks. And walking across them is a common thing for the locals. So at the end of October, Yegor and his friends wanted to take a shortcut and walked through the railway's freight park. Just for fun, the boys decided to climb onto a carriage. Yegor's friend climbed first and died on the spot. Yegor followed him. He received an electric shock of 27,000 volts. He lost consciousness and came to only in the intensive care unit of an Odesa hospital.

The teenager suffered burns on 42% of his body surface. Patients with such extensive thermal injuries are usually sent abroad for treatment. Yegor is being taken from Odesa to Lviv to the largest children's burn unit in the western regions. It has recently received equipment that allows it to save serious burn patients in Ukraine.

In the intensive care unit of St. Nicholas Children's Hospital, Yegor becomes the first patient to use the new burn bed to save his life. This modern system is equipped with its own ventilation system, temperature and humidity control. It dries the wounds and prevents the spread of bacteria. During the two weeks Yegor spent on the burn bed, his wounds almost healed. However, 5% of the burns on the surface of the guy's skin were deep and still required surgical intervention. The burn surgeons removed the dead tissue and transplanted the teenager's own skin from his thigh to these areas. A week after the operation, the boy's condition improved significantly.

Early rehabilitation is necessary to avoid further complications, especially with scars that form during the healing process.

As part of our joint project with Kyivstar Children's Hope, we continue to provide the burn unit with the necessary equipment.
