Rescue from burns for children

A little girl from Lviv doused herself with hot tea and got a deep burn. Unfortunately, this is a typical situation from which no one is immune. The main thing, the burn surgeons at St. Nicholas Children's Hospital of the First Medical Association of Lviv emphasise, is to do no harm and know how to provide first aid.

The little patient's name is Zoryana. The girl is 7 years old. A month ago, she made her own tea, but could not hold the cup with the hot drink. The boiling water got on the back of her feet and burned 2% of her body surface.

At first, the parents treated the wound with ointment, which was wrong and could have deepened the burn. Only then did they put the wound under cold water. Lesia Strilka, a burn surgeon and head of the children's burn unit at St. Nicholas Hospital, explains how to act in such cases:

"It is strictly forbidden to use the contents of the refrigerator for burns. Sour cream, creams, oils - all this only deepens the lesion. The best way out is cold running water for 10 minutes and nurofen in the child's age-appropriate dose to reduce pain."

Zoryanka got a deep burn. When the girl was first hospitalised at our children's hospital, she needed bandages every few days. Later, it became weekly as the wound began to heal. Since the burn was deep, scars would later form in its place, causing physical and psychological discomfort to the child, as it was also a cosmetic defect. Later, when the scars form, our specialists will start laser resurfacing Zoryanka's skin.

Burns are one of the most common and dangerous childhood injuries. About 12,000 children in Ukraine suffer them every year. Most of them are household injuries. But over the past 2 years, a significant number of mine-blast injuries accompanied by burns have been added. And such thermal injuries are the most difficult to treat.
Due to the lack of proper conditions and necessary equipment, Ukrainian doctors are still forced to send their most serious patients abroad. We want to change this. We want to treat Ukrainian children at home - in Ukraine. That is why, together with Kyivstar and the NEZLAMNI rehabilitation centre, we continue to raise funds to buy equipment for the children's burn unit at St Mykola's Hospital.

Kyivstar prepaid subscribers can also make a one-time donation to this charity project by sending an SMS to 450025.

We are grateful to all philanthropists who contribute to changing the treatment system for children with burns.
