A defender lost his arm in the war, but will receive help

He dreams of playing basketball and making children fall in love with sports!

Specialists from the UNBROKEN National Rehabilitation Center are helping a teacher who lost his arm in the fighting for Ukraine to realize his dream. Valentyn Anokhin, 32, is from the village of Vilhir, Rivne region. He works as a physical education teacher at a local school.

In the spring of 2022, the teacher was mobilized to the army, where he took the pseudonym "Fizruk". He fights in the Kharkiv direction. This year, in July, he was seriously wounded in the Kupiansko-Lymanskyi section of the frontline.

It all happened while repelling an enemy attack. A tank shell explodes only three meters away from the teacher. It was certain death, but Valentyn survived, despite severe multiple injuries. A fragment of ammunition hits his buttock, tears out soft tissue and then hits his arm and breaks his hand. His comrades put a tourniquet on him and the heavily wounded soldier walks about a kilometer to the evacuation point on his own legs.

He walks as far as he can. "I was lucky. I pulled myself together and evacuated to survive," Valentyn summarizes. The wounded teacher is carried the rest of the way to the evacuation vehicle on a stretcher.

Next, there are a number of stabilization centers where doctors perform primary surgical treatment of wounds. Already in a Kharkiv hospital, Valentyn's left arm is rehabilitated and a stump is formed. A vacuum apparatus will be installed on the large tissue defect on his buttock to prevent the wound from festering. For further treatment and rehabilitation, the defender was sent to Lviv, to the UNBROKEN Center. Within a month, doctors changed the vacuum apparatus, and later closed the defect on the buttock with skin from his thigh.

Now Valentyn is undergoing rehabilitation at the Center and is waiting for a prosthesis. After his recovery, Valentyn wants to return to his native school. "I see children who were small and did not know how to do anything. It's great to teach them and enjoy the results together," says the teacher. And in order to fully teach children to play basketball again, Valentyn needs not a simple prosthesis, but a bionic one. Another dream of the physical education teacher is to throw the ball into the basket with his left bionic arm.

The funds for the coveted bionic limb have been raised by donors of the dobro.ua platform, who make contributions starting from 1 hryvnia to enable doctors to install the most advanced prostheses for our defenders.
