Living every day knowing that your child's heart can stop at any moment. That the pressure can rise so high that the ambulance will not be able to save them. To see your child unable to play with peers and tired as soon as they wake up in the morning. Sometimes these are not just words, but the reality of thousands of Ukrainian families.
Every year, about 5,500 children with congenital heart disease are born in Ukraine and need help. Among these children, more than five hundred can be saved even without a chest incision! To do this, it is necessary to perform endovascular surgery to install heart implants!
The installation of an occluder (heart implant) is an innovative method that, unlike open heart surgery, does not require cutting the chest to perform surgery and then a long rehabilitation. The child's heart is not stopped, and possible hypoxia and loss of brain function are excluded. These are absolutely safe and modern surgeries that cardiac surgeons at the Amosov Institute have been performing since 2013, sometimes as many as 11 a day. The operation to install the implant lasts only a few hours, and in two days the child returns home to his or her normal life. The doctors perform the surgery free of charge, but they are powerless without medical equipment (implants).
There is currently no state funding for the purchase of implants and support for children with congenital heart disease. The purchase of heart implants, which sometimes cost up to UAH 120,000, is an unaffordable and catastrophically high sum for an ordinary Ukrainian family.
