3D against cancer!
Emilia has cancer of the calcaneus. With such localization, oncologists had to decide on amputation. However, this should not continue in the technological age. The way out has been found which is 3D-implant! A special printer will print a part made of titanium, which is similar in density and properties to human bone. This is the only way to save Emilia’s leg.
Emilia first felt severe pain in her leg in February 2020. The traumatologist examined the girl, did an X-ray and prescribed an anesthetic. However, the pain did not subside, and in May the leg was a little swollen – the cancer made itself felt long before the family found out about it. Then the family was wandering from hospital to hospital in search of the correct diagnosis.
Diagnoses were different in different cities and medical institutions. Only after the MRI in Lviv, the child was sent with a suspected tumor for a more detailed examination to the Institute of Traumatology in the capital. The biopsy confirmed cancer, and Emilia was admitted to the Cancer Institute for treatment. Droppers and chemotherapies began in September.
The next stage is surgery. If we help, Emilia will be the first patient in the pediatric department to have a 3D implant installed. X-ray data and computed tomography data will be converted into a three-dimensional computer model, which will be sent for printing. Then a complex experimental surgery will be performed, which will help not only Emilia, but also those children who will be treated after her. Let’s make a breakthrough in pediatric oncology prosthetics together!
