In Ukraine, people living with ulcerative colitis are forced to "buy" themselves a life without suffering every single month. One of them is Alina from Dnipro. Every day, she depends on expensive medications that are still not covered by the state healthcare system. Without them, Alina faces the risk of having her entire colon removed.
Alina is a loving mother to five-year-old Illia and a creative person. Before the illness, she loved painting, worked as a salon administrator, and took care of her little son.
Her health problems began after a severe case of bronchitis in the summer of 2024. Weakness, rapid weight loss, and serious digestive problems followed. By autumn, her condition worsened dramatically: when her temperature rose to 40°C and she lost consciousness, Alina was rushed to the hospital.
After examinations, doctors diagnosed her with a severe form of ulcerative colitis – a dangerous inflammatory bowel disease.
During treatment, Alina suddenly developed intestinal bleeding. Her hemoglobin level dropped to a critical point, and she required an urgent blood transfusion. But the bleeding returned the very next day.
Doctors had to perform emergency surgery and create a stoma. Alina was forced to leave behind her normal life with full-time work, time with her family, and the freedom to pursue her dreams.
She now constantly needs maintenance therapy with Imuran, Salofalk, and Pentasa.
A recent examination showed active inflammation and another flare-up of the disease. At the Gastroenterology Institute, doctors prescribed a new medication – Budenofalk. If the treatment does not work, Alina may need to have her entire colon removed.
All of the medications listed are expensive, and even for just two months, they cost a significant amount. Let’s help Alina stop this dangerous flare-up. Every contribution is a chance for her to achieve remission and live without pain.
