No life without breathing

If local doctors of a regional hospital cannot help children, they sent them to the Institute of Neurosurgery in the capital. Every day three or four complicated surgeries are performed there. The youngest patient of the department was only half an hour after birth. To save these kids’ lives the hospital urgently requires a mobile medical ventilator.

Children with the most difficult pathologies come from all over Ukraine to the Pediatric Department of Neurosurgery of the State Institution A. P. Romodanov Institute of Neurosurgery of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. It seemed that such a department should have the best provision possible but it receives almost no medicines and no equipment from the state. The Institute is the responsibility of the Academy of Sciences and science in this country is funded residually... That’s why the material and technical base of the Institute is renewed mainly thanks to the donations.

Every year more than 700 children undergo surgeries at the Pediatric Department. It happens that after the operation children cannot breathe on their own for a certain period of time, that’s why they are placed on a medical ventilator. Now there is no mobile medical ventilator in the department that can be transported together with the patient. That’s why when the patient has to be transported from one room to another for various procedures he or she cannot use the equipment and the nurse saturates their lungs with oxygen manually using a special breathing bag…

Taking into the consideration that such indicators as oxygen saturation of the body, respiratory minute volume, frequency and pressure are very important for treatment, with this method one cannot monitor them. And it’s dangerous...
