Demir is a cheerful, lively, energetic, and creative boy. It is through creativity that he finds peace, joy, and a way to express his emotions. Despite all the challenges, he remains positive and resilient.
At 5.5 years old, Demir was diagnosed with epilepsy. Since then, there has been a constant search for the right antiepileptic medications, as remissions were short-lived. After the latest adjustment to his treatment, major seizures were brought under control, but focal seizures, auras, hallucinations, and dizziness persist. Demir’s normal life is disrupted by a pronounced tic disorder, which manifests in various forms (head nodding, eye blinking, coughing, and shouting out words). He has also been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder and ADHD. The school has been accommodating and created the necessary conditions for the child to study at home with experienced and attentive teachers. They follow a modified curriculum. Demir has difficulty concentrating and tires easily. At the same time, the boy sees a psychologist, as his psychological and emotional state is unstable, does not meet age-appropriate norms, and requires attention. Demir also has selective eating habits.
Taking all these factors into account, his parents found the most suitable activity for him—one that fosters development and provides comfort—art therapy at a developmental center. Drawing has become his lifeline and a way to cope with the most difficult moments. It is his space for emotions, imagination, and joy. Moreover, it also provides the socialization that Demir lacks due to his inability to be part of a school community.
The boy undergoes regular overnight EEG monitoring. Another trip is coming up to determine the next steps in his treatment. The family provides him with the necessary medications on their own, which places a significant financial burden on them, as his father’s job is their only steady source of income. His mother spends all her time with her son.
The family is asking for help in providing Demir with the essential medications he needs to manage his condition and support his life and development. His day begins and ends with these medications; for Demir, they are as vital as the air he breathes.
