When a child is diagnosed with a serious illness, ordinary life disappears. Instead of home, there are hospital walls, constant tests, waiting, and anxiety. Meanwhile, the family holds on with the last of their strength – torn between fear for their child’s life and the search for a place to stay together and support one another.
That is why we are opening the Dacha Family House in Dnipro – and we invite you to join us.
It will be a home for families whose children are undergoing treatment for serious illnesses at the Regional Medical Center for Family Health. Every day, families arrive here from five frontline regions. Often with just one suitcase, sometimes after losing their homes. And almost always with deep fear for their child’s life.
Today, there is no space in Dnipro where such families can stay together during long-term treatment. Each family is forced to find housing on their own and spend their last savings not only on medicine, but also on a roof over their heads. And treatment lasts for months.
Nearly 40% of the families already staying in our Dacha houses are internally displaced. For them, this is not just temporary accommodation. It is the only stable point of support in cities that have become new homes not by choice.
The future Dacha in Dnipro will have six rooms and will be able to host about 100 families per year. It will be located on the grounds of the medical center, so families can stay as close as possible to treatment, with just a few minutes’ walk back "home". The Dacha will include a reliable shelter, so during air raid alerts families with children will not have to leave the building – they will be able to quickly move to a safe space.
This is especially important today, when the city’s hospitals have repeatedly come under attack and ordinary residential buildings do not always provide adequate protection.
Our Dacha is more than just walls.
Sixteen years ago, the Zaporuka Foundation opened the first such house in Kyiv, and later in Lviv. We have seen how the ability to stay together changes the course of treatment. When a mother can cook her child’s favorite soup, and a grandmother does not have to sleep in a hospital corridor. When brothers and sisters can hug after a difficult day.
Recovery is not just about protocols and chemotherapy. It is about support and warmth. It is about feeling at home, even if your real home is hundreds of kilometers away.
The Dacha in Dnipro will be a home that doesn't smell like a hospital. A home with a shared kitchen, peace and quiet, and most importantly, the opportunity to feel like a family again. This home won't appear on its own. Only you and I can create it.
Join the fundraiser! Your help is a chance for hundreds of families not to break down on a difficult path. This is a place where love becomes stronger than diagnoses. Because at home, even the walls heal.
To start the work, we plan to raise UAH 5,000,000.
