Before the full-scale invasion, Maryna lived a normal, full life, excelled at school and music school, and attended many clubs. On the day the full-scale war began, 11-year-old Maryna was taken to the regional children's hospital with a sharp deterioration in her health, urgently connected to IVs and given a terrible diagnosis – type 1 diabetes with complications.
Since then, the girl's life has changed radically: it has been filled with finger pricks to measure her blood sugar, and therefore constant pain while playing the piano, and countless insulin injections in her tummy, accompanied by tears. Her parents could not bear to see their daughter suffering, so with the help of relatives and their own resources, they bought her an insulin pump, which delivers insulin and means that she no longer has to prick her tummy five times a day, but only once every three days. They also installed a sensor that reads blood glucose levels, so the child was able to return to playing the piano, as she no longer had to constantly prick her fingers.
Unfortunately, the pump consumables need to be changed every three days, and they are quite expensive, while the sensors last for 14 days and are too costly to buy on a regular basis. It is possible to live a long life with diabetes; the important thing is to do everything possible to minimize complications. Unfortunately, Maryna currently has complications related to diabetes: her vision is deteriorating, she has thyroid disease, she has lost a lot of weight over the last month, and she has significant blood pressure problems.
Maryna finished eighth grade with excellent grades and graduated from music school this year, also with excellent grades. She loves English, studies it on her own, and reads a lot. The girl dreams of becoming an endocrinologist and inventing a cure for diabetes. Let's help this extremely gifted child live a full life, filled with the joys of childhood!
