Every year, about 12,000 children in Ukraine suffer burns. During the war, this problem became even more acute, as thermal injuries accompany every mine-blast injury. The number of children with burns during blackouts is also growing. Kids get burned by candles, and fires start due to the use of alternative light and power sources. Until recently, children with severe burns could not be helped in Ukraine, they were stabilised and sent abroad. To ensure that Ukrainian children receive all the help they need at home, a world-class burn unit has been set up at the St Nicholas Children's Hospital of the First Medical Association in Lviv. But we need help to provide the Centre with all the necessary equipment.
For a burn unit to function properly and perform interventions, an electrodermatome is needed - a special surgical device that burn surgeons use to perform skin grafting operations on burned areas. It is a critical piece of equipment without which no burn unit can function. Moreover, it is the largest in the West of the country, where 700 children from different parts of Ukraine are now treated every year. The old devices cannot withstand the load that has increased as a result of the war and need to be replaced urgently.
The Ukrainian Educational Platform launched a collection for electrodermatomes and components on Children's Day. Lviv schoolchildren were the first to support the collection with the Steel Heart Challenge campaign. At the Cheerleading Super Cup competition at the Lviv SKA cycle track, the participants launched a dance flash mob on social media to support the collection. The dance was created by cheerleaders from the Lviv Angels club and raised the first instalment of 130 thousand. The Ururu amusement park and other representatives of socially responsible businesses and Father Roman Demush also supported the collection. In total, they managed to raise UAH 559 thousand. There are still 439 thousand to go.
Fundraising for the Help Small Steel Hearts project began on 26.11.2024 on the platform of the CO ICF ‘UBB’ dobro.ua in the amount of UAH 999,097.71 (nine hundred and ninety-nine thousand ninety-seven). 71 kopecks. The original name of the project was ‘Help St. Nicholas to support small steel hearts’, as there was a need to update the collection, the name of the project was changed (without changing the amount and purpose) according to the letter of 03.12.2024 № 03/12.
As of 31.12.2024, the equipment was transferred to the Municipal Non-Commercial Enterprise ‘1st Territorial Medical Association of Lviv’.
