A decent quality of life for Zhenia

In his 16 years, Yevhenii has undergone over 60 chemotherapy blocks and 7 surgeries due to a brain tumor. Now he cannot chew, swallow, sit or walk on his own. In order for Zhenya to be able to stand upright, he needs a Baffin XL2 verticalizer.

Yevhenii is in the 9th grade on an individual program. He can read syllables, but paresis of his right hand prevents him from learning to write. The boy loves to listen to music, watch movies and loves playing with his dog Lucky.

At the age of five months, Zhenia was hospitalized with bronchopneumonia. Doctors suspected encephalitis and sent the child for an MRI. The parents were devastated when they were told that their son had a brain tumor. It was impossible to remove the ganglioglioma surgically, so they prescribed complex chemotherapy. Over the course of three years, Yevhenii underwent more than 60 courses.

When Zhenia turned 5, he had a shunt installed. For a long time, the boy's condition remained stable. But at the end of 2023, everything changed: Yevhenii lost his speech, chewing, and swallowing skills, and he developed weakness and drowsiness. The neurosurgeon of the Poltava hospital explained this by the presence of a tumor. And 2 days later, the boy fainted. His shunt was urgently replaced.

In 2024, Zhenia spent 8 months in different hospitals. On April 29, he had most of the tumor removed. It was impossible to completely remove it due to the risk of losing his vision. Soon complications arose: first a cyst, and after its removal, a hemorrhage. Last year, the boy underwent 6 operations.

Now Evgeniy cannot chew, swallow, sit or walk on his own. But neurologists strongly recommend that he maintain an upright body position for some time every day to prevent joint contractures and improve the functioning of his internal organs. Besides, seeing everything around you from a vertical position is much more interesting than staring at the ceiling of your room day after day.
