Heroes without pain
Unbearable sharp pain – to the point of screaming and even fainting. Or aching, dragging pain that prevents you from living and enjoying this life. There is also phantom pain – when a limb that is no longer there hurts, when a current cuts through the foot when it is not there.
Defender Maksym Zhadanov is 24 years old. He is from Vinnytsia region. He is missing an arm and a leg. An attack aircraft lost them near Avdiivka while defending us. An enemy drone hit him directly and cut his entire right side.
For the past six months, Maksym's life has been spent in hospitals and on painkillers. He takes painkillers three times a day and sleeping pills once a day. He says that at first it seemed that they did not help at all, but now he has simply adapted and gotten used to the pain.
Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the UNBROKEN Center has become a place of refuge for 18,000 Ukrainians affected by the war. These are military and civilians, adults and children. Some of them stay at the Center for several months, others for a year. Treatment often involves hours-long surgeries, after which the body takes weeks and months to heal. All this time, patients experience chronic pain.
To alleviate the suffering of our soldiers, the UNBROKEN Center, together with the dobro.ua charity platform, initiated the "Heroes without pain" project. Its goal is to create pain treatment centers in the hospitals of the First Medical Association of Lviv, where the UNBROKEN Center operates. Our goal - 66 586 000,00 UAH
A pain treatment center is a specialized medical unit for the diagnosis, treatment and control of various types of pain, such as acute, chronic and war-related pain.
For such a center to function, three operating rooms with state-of-the-art equipment are to be set up in three UNBROKEN medical facilities. Here, surgeons and anesthesiologists will perform interventional pain management procedures: innovative specialized procedures such as nerve blocks, pulsed radiofrequency (PRF), epidural injections and other methods to reduce pain.
The activities of the Pain Treatment Centers will allow our defenders, as well as other people affected by the war, to finally live pain-free and not depend on addictive medications. The "Heroes without pain" project will give tens of thousands of Ukrainians a chance to live pain-free.
