Little Yurko is only two and a half years old. He is a smiling, inquisitive boy who loves books, toy cars, and his mother's hugs. But for more than half a year, every day has been a struggle. Nine months ago, Yurii was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.
His little body is no longer able to regulate its blood sugar levels on its own. This means that every minute is potentially dangerous for him. A sharp drop in sugar – hypoglycemia – can lead to loss of consciousness, seizures, and coma, while hyperglycemia – excessively high sugar levels – can damage blood vessels and organs and even be life-threatening.
To keep Yurii alive and healthy, he has to be injected with insulin every day and his blood glucose levels have to be monitored continuously. But it is very difficult to do this with a child who is not yet able to say what is bothering him – crying can mean hunger or tiredness, or it can be a warning sign of a life-threatening drop in blood sugar.
That is why Yurii vitally needs continuous glucose monitoring sensors. A sensor is a device that attaches to the body and transmits information about sugar levels to his mother's phone every minute. Without exaggeration, it saves his life every day.
Without sensors, his parents would have to prick Yurii's finger up to 15 times a day, especially at night when his sugar levels drop sharply. Without sensors, they would not know that something was wrong with their son until it was too late, which could lead to irreversible complications: vision impairment, kidney failure, developmental delays, and even diabetic coma. Help Yuri not lose his childhood to restrictions, pain, and anxiety!
