Little Viktoria is only 9 years old, but her childhood is no longer like that of her peers. Five years ago, carefree games and childish pranks were replaced by constant monitoring, measurements and injections. When the girl was only four, she suddenly started drinking a lot, quickly lost weight and constantly felt weak. Her mother, who herself has been struggling with diabetes for almost thirty years, immediately noticed alarming symptoms. The sugar measurement confirmed all fears – Viktoria has type 1 diabetes, insulin-dependent.

Now every day is a constant war for stability, which requires round-the-clock control. Vika needs regular insulin injections, and in order to determine the exact dose, you need to constantly measure the level of glucose in the blood. At first, this had to be done with a glucometer, which requires painful finger pricks 10-15 times a day, or even more. The hardest part was the nights, because Vika didn’t feel low blood sugar, so she had to constantly interrupt her sleep with painful measurements.

But the family found a solution that eased Viktoria’s suffering and made her life safer – a continuous glucose monitoring system. Using a small sensor that is attached to the body and continuously measures sugar, glucose level data is transmitted to a phone or a special device every few minutes, allowing her mother to see the dynamics and threats in real time. This means fewer punctures, less pain for Vika, and a significantly lower risk of dangerous hypo- and hyperglycemia, which can lead to serious consequences.

The cost of such a system is high, and the sensors need to be replaced regularly. Unfortunately, it’s difficult to provide for everyone with two diabetics in the family. Give Viktoria a chance to play, learn, and just be a child without experiencing constant pain!
