Sofiika is an active and creative girl. She happily attends choreography, drawing, and salt dough sculpting classes, loves riding her scooter, and building with LEGO. But every day she has to be strong and brave at such a young age. For almost 7 years now she has been living with type 1 diabetes.
It all began when she was almost one and a half years old, with a terrifying episode and intensive care. The child, who had never been ill before, was admitted in a pre-comatose state. More than a week in intensive care, more than a month in hospital – and then a new life, but a far more difficult one. Insulin injections, dietary control and carbohydrate counting, endless pricks on her tiny little fingers. Her parents had to give injections in her legs as well, because there was not a single uninjured spot left on her arms.
Sofia is an emotional girl, which means her blood glucose can drop or rise sharply, leading to frequent hypo- and hyperglycemic episodes. That is precisely why continuous monitoring is a lifesaver and allows her parents to help her in time. Without it, catching blood sugar fluctuations is very difficult, as Sofiika does not feel them.
This has become especially important now that Sofiika has started school. With monitoring, she can spend her breaks almost like other children – having fun and socializing – rather than constantly measuring her blood sugar with a glucometer. And her mother can remotely monitor her blood glucose levels and save her daughter from dangerous episodes.
There are two children in the family, and unfortunately both daughters have diabetes. Their mother has to monitor the blood glucose levels of two daughters at once. This is an enormous physical, emotional, and financial trial for the entire family.
We ask you to support a family for whom the safety, health, and wellbeing of their children depends on timely blood sugar monitoring and the necessary treatment supplies – sensors.
