Vitalii has always had a great sense of humor – the boy always finds a common language with children and adults. Born the third child in the family, he grew up healthy and cheerful.
After graduating from the second grade, Vitalyk became interested in football and spent the whole summer on the field: at training or in the yard with his neighbors. The boy never complained about his health, but when he started school in the fall, he stood out among his peers because of his short height and weight. The parents decided to take their son for a checkup, and the diagnosis came like a bolt from the blue – Vitalii had type 1 diabetes, an incurable disease that requires careful care and nutrition, as well as lifelong insulin injections.
The drug should be injected 5-7 times a day. It is also necessary to constantly, up to ten times a day, measure the sugar level with a glucometer, each time piercing a finger to take blood. It is unbearably hard to look at the pricked fingers, hands, and feet. However, these are mandatory measures to save the child's life – high or low readings can cause a child to fall into a coma. And this is not to mention the overall negative impact on the development of the body, which became especially noticeable in Vitalyk – at almost fourteen years old, he is the height and weight of a third-grader.
The parents learned about a sugar sensor that transmits the reading to the phone, which is very convenient because the measurements are continuous without any finger pricking. This is especially useful at night: you can monitor your sugar level without unnecessary stress and insomnia. But with all its many advantages, the sensor has one significant drawback: the price. The family has nine children, and his father's only salary from seasonal construction work is not enough to cover the cost of constant sensor updates, which last for two weeks.
