Ksenia was born by caesarean section. But the first hours of her life were interrupted by her rescue. The baby was placed in an incubator and spent her first month in the hospital. The girl was discharged in satisfactory condition, but the happiness did not last long – within six months, regular trips to all possible doctors became the norm again. Grade 1-2 hydrocephalus, torticollis, leg problems, monthly ultrasounds, orthopedic shoes, medication. But over time, things more or less settled down – Ksenia even went to kindergarten.
And then suddenly, at the age of 5, like a bolt from the blue, the girl was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, reactive pancreatitis, kidney and ureter disease, asthenic-vegetative syndrome, gallbladder deformation, and mitral valve prolapse with grade 1 insufficiency. And again, there was running around to doctors, again prayers, again medication. Her fingers had to be pricked up to 30 times a day to check her blood sugar level.
Ksenia is a very good girl who understands that she is sick but does not give up hope of recovery despite all the explanations about the incurability of her condition. She is now seven years old and has completed first grade through homeschooling. She has completed the entire course of treatment, with the next one scheduled in six months, and so on several times. Her mother, who is raising her daughter alone, is doing her best, and her grandmother is helping them, but these funds are not enough to ease the pain in her fingers. Continuous glucose monitoring sensors, which save her from pain and anxious uncertainty, are prohibitively expensive – even denying themselves everything, the family cannot afford them.
