Maryam has always been the life of the party: active and cheerful, she lit up every room with a whirlwind of laughter. But suddenly, at the age of eight, the girl began to change rapidly. The child was constantly hungry, drank an unnatural amount of water, often ran to the restroom, and lost weight right before our eyes. The doctors who sent the girl for a glucose test were horrified when they received the results: her blood sugar was so high that any further increase could send the girl into a coma. Maryam was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes mellitus with severe acetonemic syndrome, a serious and, most frighteningly, incurable diagnosis.
The girl spent two weeks in the hospital. But the hardest part came later for her and her family. Frequent hyper- and hypoglycemia kept her mother awake at night, constantly fearing for her daughter. Over the years, Maryam got used to a special lifestyle and diet. But with this disease, every new day is a challenge. You never know how the body will behave today, how it will react even to a regularly eaten meal or a simple walk.
For a calm, safe life, a girl needs sensors to continuously monitor her blood sugar. Thanks to such devices, you can react in a timely manner to low or high sugar – this is especially useful at night when the child is sleeping, because an untimely reaction to a change can even lead to coma. However, unfortunately, instead of peace of mind, relief from the pain of constant glucose meter punctures, and fear of uncertainty, sensors create an unbearable financial burden. A single mother raising a girl in Dnipro on her own cannot afford to buy these devices. Every child has the right to a carefree childhood full of fun and wonder – help Maryam realize hers!
