Six-year-old Eva is a very active and cheerful child who loves to draw and dance. For almost six months now, she has been battling an incurable disease that has radically changed her life.
In January, the girl fell ill with bilateral pneumonia and spent about three weeks in the hospital. After being discharged from the hospital, her health deteriorated significantly: Eva began to lose weight rapidly, sleep poorly, and even lose interest in life. She drank a lot and slept a lot. After being examined by a specialist, the girl was immediately admitted to the hospital with a blood sugar level four times higher than normal. The diagnosis was type 1 diabetes mellitus, insulin-dependent with severe ketoacidosis.
Due to her young age, it is difficult to determine the correct dose of insulin. She has to take up to ten injections a day, and even that is sometimes not enough. Constant fluctuations in sugar levels have already had consequences – frequent hypoglycemia has led to damage to the eyeball. Hypoglycemia, i.e., excessively low sugar levels, is very difficult to control without monitoring, so the girl needs sensors for continuous glucose monitoring.
This year, Eva should have started first grade, but due to her uncontrolled illness, instead of learning to write, read, and interact with her peers and the world, she is learning to live in a new way.
Despite her difficult diagnosis, little Eva enjoys every day. Help this child not to lose her bright, sincere love for the world!
