My fight for the chance to breathe

Scoliosis is not the only disease that hangs over a child like a sword of Damocles. From the first years of life, Ulyana and her brother Kolya experienced increasing muscle weakness and hypotension, then it became difficult to climb stairs and their hands began to tremble. Eventually, Ulyana developed scoliosis and hip subluxation. The cause was found out only in 2021: both children were diagnosed with SMA: spinal muscular atrophy.
In accordance with the agreement No. 21 on cooperation between the CO ICF ‘Ukrainian Philanthropic Marketplace’ and the Charity Operator of the Charity Fund “Pomogayem” dated 31.08.2020 and the additional agreement No. 21.294 dated 02.12.2024, the project ‘My Struggle to Breathe’ was posted on the dobro.ua website to attract charitable donations to pay for the treatment of Ulyana Lifanchuk.
On 06.02.2025, thanks to the donors of the Ukrainian Philanthropic Marketplace who closed Ulyana's collection, we received UAH 294,840.00 (two hundred and ninety-four thousand eight hundred and forty hryvnias, 00 kopecks) to the Foundation's current account to pay for the child's treatment and project administration. 
At the end of March this year, Ulyanka underwent a long-awaited surgery at the Okhmatdyt hospital. The surgery was quite difficult for the girl, as she has a complicated case of SMA, a concomitant disease. The operation lasted about 5.5 hours, but Professor Levytskyi was satisfied with the result. 
Overall, Ulyana is feeling well. A follow-up examination by the doctor is scheduled in two months. During this period, the child must learn to walk again, as spinal correction requires the formation of a new way of walking.
Ulyana is already taking a few steps on her own. However, she still needs constant care. The girl does not attend school yet, as she cannot sit for long periods of time, so she studies at home whenever possible.
We plan to use the remaining unused funds in the amount of UAH 56,040 (fifty-six thousand forty hryvnias and 00 kopecks) to meet Ulyana's needs in 2025.
