Hope for life for premature born children!

In the last years there has been a stable growth of the rate of premature born children births. As widely known, all new born children are fragile, but the premature born are to much greater extent, while the problem of preterm births stays among the problems, underestimated by the society. The goal of our project is to supply the Ukrainian hospitals with a necessary medical equipment for saving the preterm born babies.

"Svichado" Charity Fund, TM "Ranenko", Ukrainian Philantropic Marketplace, Association of Neonatologists of Ukraine and the Association of parents of premature born children "Early Birds" have joined efforts and created a project "Neterplyachki" - to draw attention of our society and informing it about the problem of premature born children.

Around 500 000 children are born every year in our country, while 24 000 of them are born preterm. Such kids are a special category- they are very fragile and weak. Many of the functions of their bodies are immature. If a baby weighs below 1500 grams at birth, it suffers many problems in the first months of it's life, among which are problems of pulmonary, cardiovascular, nervous and digestive systems. Every saved life of such children is priceless! And saving it is possible only due to a modern medical equipment.

The goal of this project, which is dedicated to the Day of Premature Born Children, marked on the 17th of November each year, is to purchase the most modern medical equipment for four Ukrainian hospitals for saving children's lives.

1. Department of intensive therapy of Clinical maternity hospital N.2 in Chernivtsi and of Rivne Regional Children's Hospital have an urgent need in special systems for oxygen therapy.
Preemies, born before the 37th week of pregnancy, unfortunately have multiple health problems, which is connected to the immaturity of all organs. First of all- these are the lungs' diseases, because of which children require an oxygen therapy in the delivery room and further in the process of nursing. The safety of oxygen therapy depends on certain conditions: oxygen concentration, moisture and temperature of the oxygen mixture. Conduction of the safe and useful oxygen therapy is only possible with the use of special systems, which have a special humidifier with a camera, a heater and a device for regulating the oxygen concentration level.

2. Institute of Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology of NAMH Ukraine - IPAH - a leading research institution in the country in the field of maternal and child health, annually helps around 25 thousand of women and children. IPAH takes the most difficult cases and has the highest indicators of successful help to the premature born children. The intensive care unit strongly requires the oxygen tents, which are necessary for the oxygen therapy for newborns. Formation of proper breathing is a crucial stage of transition to the post-natal condition that affects the oxygen supply of all organs and systems, normal heartbeat and life of the baby.
Therefore, in the case of birth traumas and the development of pathologies there is a need of external support for breathing until such time when the child can breathe on its own.
Lungs is a very fragile organ and the newborns' lungs are twice as vulnerable, therefore a special equipment is used for the series of oxygen therapy, - it is adapted to the physiology and needs of the littlest patients. Currently one of the most widely spread devices are special oxygen tents, which can supply the necessary concentration of oxygen (up to 60%) for the proper breathing of children. Such high levels of saturation are achieved by a closed construction and the absence of leakage of oxygen into the surrounding air. The construction of the tent for newborns consists of transparent elements and allows to constantly monitor the baby without breaking the sealing of respiratory protection.

3. Department of nursing of premature babies of the National Children's Specialized Hospital "Okhmatdet" needs to acquire an infusion syringe pump. Children, born preterm, lose the connection with the mother's body and the placenta, which had supplied the oxygen and the nutrients. After clamping the cord babies require immediate fluid and providing nutrients from the outside, in vials as a venous infusion therapy to be carried out with well-calculated rate over a prolonged time. Conducting of the proper infusion therapy for such children is only possible with the help of special devices- infusion syringe pumps, supplying the liquid for intravenous feeding, accurately calculated the speed of it and protecting the brain blood vessels from fluid overload. The pump is designed to deliver medication with high accuracy at both high and low infusion rates. The pump has an extensive control and alarm systems, as well as built-in battery. All this provides a continuous pump operation during patient's transportation or the power outage, as well as it monitors the correct operation of the pump and triggers an audible alarm, lighting up the cause of the problem.

International Day of Premature Born Children is marked around the world for eight consecutive years and it was initiated by the European Foundation for the Care of Newborn Infants, (EFCNI). This event has simply made a breakthrough, since the preterm births are not single cases. Annually about a 1500000 of children are born preterm. On average it's one of ten babies. Preterm births is one of the main reasons of children mortality in the world.
