Hope to return to normal life

Six months ago, Nazarii was swimming and speaking English fluently – and now he can't even swallow on his own. The reason is autoimmune encephalitis. Nazarii has always been an active child: he swam and played computer games, spoke English fluently and dreamed of visiting Japan.

His life changed dramatically in the fall of 2024. One September day, Nazarii's temperature rose sharply. After 3 days, his condition seemed to improve, he even started playing with his sister Nastia. But the next day, the boy's father, entering his room, found his son in convulsions.

Doctors at the Ternopil Regional Hospital tried to stop the seizures for two months. On the third day, due to breathing problems, Nazarii was placed in a tracheostomy. He cannot eat on his own – he needs feeding through the tube.

Due to a sharp deterioration in his health in February, the boy was transferred from the rehabilitation center in Modrychi to the St. Nicholas Clinic in Lviv.

After prolonged EEG monitoring, the doctors realized that Depakine and Clonazepam were not working, so they left Levetiracetam and added Carbamazepine. The seizures were stopped.

At the same time, the doctors diagnosed autoimmune encephalitis – a disease in which the immune system attacks brain cells, perceiving them as foreign. Nazarii was prescribed Bioven, which helps stop the destructive process and gives the brain the opportunity to recover.

Treatment with Bioven has already brought positive changes: the boy began to see again, respond to pain, use his left hand, doing exercises with a rehabilitation specialist. Although his hearing has not yet returned, there is hope that the treatment will help!
