War steals childhood from children. But we are trying to give them back their strength. When a child hears explosions, their body lives in a state of constant stress. When they lose their home, even a simple bowl of soup becomes a luxury.
But food is not just calories. For a traumatized child, it means:
- protein – to rebuild cells and muscles;
- complex carbohydrates – for the energy to play and learn;
- iron – so the brain can think;
- calcium – so bones grow strong, despite everything.
We don’t just feed – we heal with food. At our Centre for Social and Psychological Rehabilitation of Children in Kyiv, 12 children aged 2 to 17 live around the clock. These are children who have been removed from dysfunctional families, who have lost their families, and more. They come to us with chronic illnesses, weakened immune systems, developmental delays, pale skin, and signs of chronic malnutrition. They are afraid there won't be enough food again. They hide bread under their pillows. They sit silent in the corner because they don't believe anyone will take care of them.
When we start feeding traumatized children with balanced, tasty, and regular meals, something miraculous happens: the first smiles appear, then laughter, rosy cheeks, a sparkle in their eyes, energy and a desire to play and learn, and deep, peaceful sleep. A shared meal in a cozy dining hall is a lesson in safety. When a child sees that food does not disappear, they stop being afraid of the future.
With your support of our project, we will purchase the necessary food products, cover the salaries of: the catering manager (who plans the menu, controls food quality, and ensures the children receive tasty and nutritious meals), the cook who prepares delicious and wholesome food, as well as utility costs. Give young Ukrainians a chance at a healthy future. May their plates be full and their hearts be at peace.
