Sterilizers are mostly bought by young parents to sterilize baby bottles and this comes as no surprise to all. However, they can also serve other purpose – our children are 5, 10 and even 25 years old and for each of them a sterilizer is something that literally can save his/her life. Our Foundation assists girls and boys living with a serious genetic disease called cystic fibrosis and every infection that settles in their lungs which is apparently the CF's main target can take their lives. And our task is to protect them.

Cystic fibrosis is a severe genetic disorder which affects all of the body organs at birth and impairs vital organs and systems' function. In particular, DNA defect causes buildup of thick mucus in the bronchi which cannot be coughed up in a regular way. The affected person has to take mucolytic agents, do inhalations, special massages and physical exercises on a daily basis for the single purpose of clearing the airways and enabling breathing. Moreover, apart from the lungs congestion, mucus serves as a favorable medium for breeding all kinds of infections – a cystic fibrosis patient is very susceptible to them and spends all of his/her life fighting these infections.

One of the ways to mitigate the risk is regular sterilization of breathing training devices and inhalator parts used by the patient. Most of the families do it in the only way they can afford – by means of boiling. However, not all of the parts can withstand the boiling and those that can, gradually deteriorate and boiling shortens their service life… Plus, sometimes boiling is not an option. What to do if you are admitted to the hospital when you need sterilization the most? What to do if you travel? Too many 'ifs' for the vital need.

The most convenient and efficient solution is using a sterilizer. However, there is only one drawback – it costs more than most of the families can afford because they also have to buy medicines on a monthly basis and have other continuous needs which are also vitally important, so they have to choose.

In 2018 our Foundation acquired 47 sterilizers and distributed them between children in its care. We ask for your help in covering the cost of 7 more units which are vitally important for our children.
