Under a double blow
It is not easy for migrants to start life from scratch in a new place. It is doubly difficult if there is a child with a disability in the family. Dania Olefir from Zolote, Luhansk region, has been living with diabetes for 9 years.
Each of Dania’s mornings does not start with a cup of tea, but with a finger prick and an insulin injection. To alleviate the condition and effective treatment, he began to use Libre sensors. To buy a supply of sensors for a year and a reader for them, he needs 58,500 UAH. The family of IDPs cannot afford this amount.
The life of the family changed on an October day in 2013, when an unconscious child was admitted to intensive care with a glucose level of 17 mmol/l. The attending physician then told the parents: “The condition is serious, but the child is holding on courageously. Pray for him!” Dania survived.
Then there were two weeks of adaptation to a new lifestyle, diet. New terms appeared in the vocabulary of the family: insulin, glucometer, bread unit. And the most important word is “compensation”, because thanks to it, with diabetes, you can live happily.
Due to frequent punctures, the skin of the fingers became rougher, the punctures became more and more painful, healed for a long time, and became infected. Parents were looking for a way to alleviate the suffering of their son and they found it. The Freestyle Libre device made it possible to compensate for diabetes, that is, to keep glucose at an acceptable level.
Dania started life from scratch when a full-scale invasion began: on February 26, 2022, he was forced to move with his parents and younger sister from Zolote, Luhansk region, to Ternivka, Dnipropetrovsk region.
The boy changed his school to a lyceum, where he studies in the 10th grade. Upon graduation, he dreams of becoming a dentist. The only thing that has remained unchanged is sugar monitoring, insulin injections and sports (Dania goes to the gym).
One Libre 2 sensor lasts 14 days. It is installed on the forearm, and a thin catheter is inserted under the skin, automatically measuring the glucose level every 5 minutes. To read this information, you need a reader.
We are raising money for 24 sensors and a reader. The family is in a difficult financial situation. Let's help provide Dania with everything he needs!
