Lera has cerebral palsy, spastic tetraparesis and microcephaly – the consequences of the umbilical cord wrapping around her neck twice and oxygen deprivation. Immediately after birth, she suffered bilateral cerebral haemorrhage, spent several weeks in intensive care, and was on a ventilator for six days. When Lera entered her period of active growth, her weak muscles could no longer hold her bones in the correct position, and she was diagnosed with severe S-shaped scoliosis of the thoracolumbar spine.
In accordance with cooperation agreement No. 21 between the Ukrainian Charity Exchange Charitable Foundation and the charity aid operator Pomagaem Charitable Foundation dated 31 August 2020 and supplementary agreement No. 21. 321 dated 16 June 2025, the project ‘Insidious scoliosis threatens life’ was posted on the website dobro.ua with the aim of attracting charitable donations to pay for the treatment of Valeria Yakimenko.
The initial amount to be raised was UAH 269,640.00 (two hundred and sixty-nine thousand six hundred and forty hryvnias, 00 kopecks). The mother reported that the child's condition had deteriorated sharply and it was no longer possible to postpone the operation. The parents found part of the funds themselves. When the rest of the money for the treatment was raised on two information platforms: the Ukrainian Charity Exchange and the Pomagaem Charitable Foundation, we asked to close the fundraiser and reduce the amount of the project on the Ukrainian Charity Exchange to the amount actually raised – 47,812.11 UAH (forty-seven thousand eight hundred and twelve hryvnias, 11 kopecks), and to transfer the funds to our current account for partial payment of the operation and administration of the project, in accordance with letter No. 472 dated 01.09.2025.
In early September, Valeria underwent a long-awaited spinal surgery at the OKHMATDIT hospital (Kyiv). The procedure lasted 8 hours and, according to the doctor, went very well, without complications. The postoperative suture healed well, there was no inflammation. The doctors admitted that they did not expect such a good result given the child's diagnosis of grade 4 scoliosis.
Lera was allowed to sit up on the fifth day after the operation. Before that, the back of the bed was gradually raised so that her body could gradually get used to it and her back would not be subjected to excessive strain. For almost a month, the girl took painkillers at night, but from 4 October she was able to manage without them. Her back became less tired, her posture straightened, her height increased, and she no longer slouches. The girl has already adapted to the construction. A new stage lies ahead: learning to walk again, stand, and live without pain.
Currently, all funds transferred from the Ukrainian Charity Exchange have been spent on the child's needs.
We sincerely thank the donors and partners of dobro.ua for their help and support!
