18-year-old Olha has been battling a terrible disease for half her life. At the age of nine, her life changed dramatically: she lost weight, lost her appetite, was constantly thirsty, and felt exhausted. After examination, she was given a terrible diagnosis – type 1 diabetes, a severe form with a high risk to life.
Since then, she has had to measure her blood sugar level more than 10 times a day, sometimes even more, inject insulin 5-6 times a day, follow a diet, and eat strictly according to a schedule. At first, it was very difficult, both physically and mentally. The girl was helped by the diabetes school at the Berezovy Gai sanatorium, where she learned to count bread units and calculate insulin correctly.
To maintain stable sugar and glycated hemoglobin levels, the girl has to constantly monitor her glucose and not miss a single insulin injection. A few years ago, she had the opportunity to use continuous monitoring sensors, which make life much easier and give her fingers a break from constant pricks, but their cost is too high for her family. Therefore, Olia can now only afford to use the sensor once every few months.
