Polina is a cheerful, friendly, and sociable child. But at the same time, she is a real fighter. For the third year now, the girl has been battling type 1 diabetes for the right to a full and vibrant life. The diagnosis came as a complete shock to the family. The disease was not noticed immediately: the family attributed warning signs, such as rapid weight loss and constant thirst, to the summer heat and the girl's active lifestyle. But her mother's persistent anxiety got the better of her, and she took her daughter for tests, which confirmed her worst fears.
Since then, Polina and her family have had a completely different life: measuring sugar levels more than 10 times a day, controlling carbohydrates, insulin injections with every meal, sleepless nights due to the need to take measurements to prevent hypoglycemia so that the child does not fall into a coma. During further examinations, doctors found enlargement of the liver, thyroid gland, and kidneys.
Now Polina and her small family have gotten used to her diagnosis and the constant vigilance it requires. The girl has even learned to use a glucometer herself. Polina already understands that she needs an injection before eating and is no longer afraid. She goes to kindergarten, where she happily plays with other children. However, in order to attend kindergarten, Polina needs continuous glucose monitoring sensors – the staff cannot take responsibility for the well-being of a child who can become terribly ill in a matter of minutes without warning. Unfortunately, in Ukraine, the state does not yet provide patients with these much-needed devices, and the salary of her mother, who is raising her daughter alone, is not enough to buy them. Help Polina not to lose the colors of childhood in her fight against the disease!
