Kharkiv lives under constant shelling. But even in these conditions, children are born. The 6th Maternity Hospital of Kharkiv* continues to operate, saving the lives of newborns, many of whom are premature.

Preterm birth is a serious medical and social issue in Ukraine. According to the WHO, around 15 million babies are born prematurely every year worldwide, and Ukraine is no exception. Due to war, the number of preterm births is rising due to stress, lack of medical resources, and the difficult living conditions faced by pregnant women. These babies require specialized care since their organs are not yet fully developed to function independently. Every day without the necessary medical assistance can cost them their lives.

One of the most common threats to newborns is neonatal jaundice—a condition in which bilirubin accumulates in a baby’s blood, causing the skin and mucous membranes to turn yellow.

In most cases, physiological jaundice resolves on its own, but if bilirubin levels become too high or persist for too long, it can lead to severe complications:

  • Brain and nervous system damage (bilirubin encephalopathy)
  • Developmental delays
  • Hearing and vision impairment

Premature babies are especially vulnerable, as jaundice can become a direct threat to their lives.

To diagnose and treat this condition in time, doctors need modern medical equipment:

  • Phototherapy lamp – helps break down bilirubin in the baby’s body and remove it naturally. This is the primary and safest treatment method.

  • Non-invasive bilirubinometer – allows for quick and painless bilirubin level measurement through the skin, eliminating the need for repeated blood draws. This is especially crucial for preterm infants, who are already fragile.

Right now, the hospital lacks this equipment, forcing doctors to work almost blindly. This means babies face the risk of severe complications—or even survival may not be possible.

Modern equipment gives doctors the ability to act in time, reduce risks, and save lives. Every day without it means babies losing their chance for a healthy future.

We are raising funds to purchase this life-saving equipment for the 6th Maternity Hospital in Kharkiv*. Every contribution is a chance for a baby to grow up healthy.
