Shelter for people with disabilities

Cherkasy now is the safest among the central regions of Ukraine: people who have suffered from military operations are coming here. Here people also find temporary shelter for a night or two, and there are also those who stay permanently. Among those remaining in Cherkasy there are many people with disabilities and the elderly.

In Cherkassy, ​​there is the only house in Ukraine for 100 families, fully adapted to the needs of people with disabilities. Now 100 families live here, of which 85 have children with disabilities who move in wheelchairs, the rest are raising children with mental illnesses.

The specialized house has 4 large rooms: a massage room, exercise therapy room, a training center and a room for group work. In pre-war times, classes and rehabilitation were held here, but now these 4 rooms have been converted into a center to accommodate 20 IDPs (including 10 with disabilities) affected by hostilities. Today, at least 6-7 people are in the center every day - these are those who stop only for the night, and three more who live here longer and plan to stay in Cherkasy. We have created almost all the conditions for a comfortable stay of people in our center, but some important things are still missing.

For the arrangement of sleeping places, we need to purchase:
10 folding beds with mattresses,
10 mattress covers,
10 chairs,
2 first aid kits,
4 lanterns,
2 extensions.

To equip the kitchen we need:
cooler,
thermopot,
2 thermoses for food,
10 cutlery sets.

There are 2 toilet rooms in the center, but they also need to be completed. For this we need:
hygienic shower (mixer),
2 handrails for sanitary rooms,
a mobile lift for people with disabilities (will help people get up and sit in the bathroom, which is in one of the toilet rooms).

Thanks to this project and the opportunity to rebuild the center and expand the space in 3 months, we will be able to shelter 460 people, of which at least a third are people with disabilities. We are the only ones in the city that can host these most vulnerable social groups and provide them with safe and comfortable conditions for temporary or permanent stay of people affected by hostilities and internally displaced persons with disabilities and their companions.

On the basis of the Center there is also a hypocentre with 9 trained horses and ponies. We have developed a hippotherapy treatment program in which children and people with disabilities can participate free of charge. However, during the war, we had a problem with the financing of animal feed. In order for people with disabilities to be able to attend hippotherapy classes free of charge in the future, we need to purchase 150 bales of hay, 250 kg of oats, 200 kg of corn, 250 kg of barley and veterinary drugs, we also need to pay for the services of a blacksmith.
