Asia’s fight for life has been going on for a year. Everything began with a severe case of complicated COVID-19. Bilateral pneumonia and acute respiratory failure caused her lungs to stop supplying the body with enough oxygen. In critical condition, Asia was airlifted by helicopter from Zaporizhzhia to Kyiv to the Okhmatdyt National Children’s Hospital.
To save the child, doctors used ECMO – a device that temporarily performs the function of the lungs and oxygenates the blood outside the body. Asia remained on ECMO for 18 days. Her life was saved, but a severe complication developed: dense scar membranes formed in her bronchi, blocking the airways and impairing gas exchange.
The girl has undergone numerous bronchoscopies under anesthesia, during which doctors cut through these formations and widen the bronchi. There has been positive progress – Asia can now move independently within her hospital room. However, she remains oxygen-dependent and cannot manage without an oxygen concentrator. Today, Asia is the only child in Ukraine with such a complex post-COVID respiratory condition.
Further treatment in Kyiv is planned for the end of March. For transportation and everyday life, Asia urgently needs a portable oxygen concentrator. It will ensure a stable supply of oxygen and allow her to remain mobile.
In addition to Asia, the family has two more children, and only the father is working. After a long period of treatment, the family is exhausted and needs our support. Together we can purchase the concentrator, which costs 120,000 UAH, and give Asia not just a device, but the freedom to breathe and move.
