Fifteen years ago, a healthy son, Daniel, was born to the Lyalikov family. Since childhood, he was very active and inquisitive. He loved to play sports, read, and play. Until the boy fell ill at the age of eight. It would seem that it was just a common cold, all children get sick in the autumn rainy weather, but not all of them have such complications. Relatives and acquaintances began to notice rapid changes… rapid fatigue, weight loss, constant thirst. Daniel underwent many examinations and three weeks later the family heard a terrible diagnosis – diabetes. Ironically, this news came on the boy’s birthday – instead of going home, where his favorite chocolate cake was waiting, he and his mother were going to the hospital.
The two weeks in the ward were terrible. Pain and despair accompanied the family constantly. But Daniel held on bravely – the boy was not broken by either constant hunger or the burning pain from the injections, which were required up to twenty times a day. The time in the hospital was not wasted: the family was taught to live with the diagnosis, told all the features of the disease, explained when and how to do it, and the family “raised their heads”. Everything no longer seemed so scary, they understood that diabetes is not the end of life, it is simply a change in its way.
Since then, Daniel has been living a new life for six years. At least once a year he goes to the hospital for examination, periodically takes medication, constantly follows a diet and continues to prick his body with needles every day to control sugar and inject insulin. The number of punctures can be reduced, instead of ten blood tests per day, one puncture can be done every 24 days - for this a 24-hour monitoring sensor is required. Unfortunately, the family cannot afford such expenses - the son’s illness is already taking the lion’s share of the family budget. Daniel and his family continue to believe in the best no matter what – believe in them too!
