Iryna's childhood was carefree and joyful. Her parents rejoiced in their daughter's successes in kindergarten and then in school. The girl loved dancing and learning English. But then her life was turned upside down. War broke out, and her father joined the army. Life lost its color, and fear settled in the child's eyes. The sounds of air raid sirens ringing from all around sowed unrest in her vulnerable child's mind, unrest that was foreign and beyond her child's comprehension.
For Iryna, these trials did not pass in vain. The girl began to lose weight rapidly, and at the same time had an unhealthy appetite and thirst. When the test results came back, the family was shocked: the diagnosis was grim, an incurable disease – type 1 diabetes. The first few months were unbearably difficult – her mind refused to accept, come to terms with, or adapt to the new conditions of life, which continued but was no longer the same as before.
It is very difficult to control sugar levels without monitoring devices. In order to live and eat normally, Iryna had to prick her finger more than 400 times in two months to measure her sugar levels with a glucometer. There was not a single spot left on her fingers, and her mother's heart was breaking into pieces.
A sensor for continuous round-the-clock blood sugar monitoring became a lifeline for the girl. It alerts her to conditions such as hypo- and hyperglycemia, which are very dangerous to her health and life. The downside of such a gadget is its high cost and short lifespan. A new one must be installed every 24 days. Sometimes the sensor can break or malfunction during installation and use, so it is necessary to have several sensors in reserve. This is a significant expense for the family, so they are asking for help in purchasing sensors to make their daughter's life easier.
